Когда хозяин приближается, собака рычит, если грызет кость. В подобной ситуации собака укусила хозяина за руку, когда он протянул её к еде. В ответ хозяин захватил собаку и, прижимая к полу, стал её давить и придушивать за шею. Казалось уже, что пёс скоро отключится, но все-таки он не прекращал сопротивление. Чтобы победить кобеля в такой ситуации, хозяин побил его. После этого юный кобель довольно долго был послушен, помня о трепке. Но с наступлением полового созревания аналогичные случаи непослушания и агрессии в отношении хозяина возобновились. Что нужно делать, чтобы исправить поведение собаки, проявляющей агрессию?

Некоторые породы собак обладают особо твердым, независимым характером, и обычное воспитание им не подходит. Надо понять, что например у кавказских овчарок - игра, это не главное. Поскольку это настоящие рабочие собаки, в отношении них всегда необходимы высокая требовательность, последовательность (т.е. неизменность) поведения дрессировщика и регулярная работа. В основе дрессировочных упражнений, направленных на выработку покорности собаки человеку, должна лежать абсолютная требовательность хозяина к своему питомцу. Одновременно необходимо постоянно доказывать и подтверждать свое (социальное - в отношениях с собакой) превосходство над собакой. Для этого в качестве наказания можно потрясти собаку за загривок, повалить на спину, вам неизменно нужно добиваться от собаки требуемого поведения - в каждом из случаев неповиновения. В противном случае, с возрастом животное все чаще будет оказывать сопротивление в стремлении к лидерству. И такая неизбежная проверка соотношения сил собаки и ее хозяина может оказаться не в пользу человека. Предположим, ваша собака склонна к лидерству. Прежде она могла быть лишь "любимым, забавным псом" и в качестве смелого и обороноспособного животного вы ее не воспринимали. Но вы обязаны предвидеть развитие хода событий! И не допустить неповиновения, которое - обусловлено все же природой вашего питомца, а не чем-нибудь иным. С жестким, стремящимся к лидерству кобелем необходимо заниматься - речь не об аджилити, флайболе или тому подобном - ежедневно по часу, устраивая между занятий контрольные с участием инструктора-дрессировщика.

Занятия следует проводить до завершения полового созревания собаки. Цель занятий - направить собаку в нужном направлении, используя пищу в качестве основного стимула.

ЭТАП ПЕРВЫЙ: обратите внимание собаки на миску с едой или большую кость. Четко скомандуйте: ВОЗЬМИ! - и разрешите поесть. Потом подайте команды: ФУ! и - СИДЕТЬ!, и заберите корм. При этом собака должна сесть. Затем поставьте миску, однако далеко не уходите, чтобы в нужный момент быстро пресечь неповиновение. Как только собака поймет, что от нее хотят, и научится сохранять заданное положение (сидя), ненадолго отлучитесь. Вернувшись, поднимите миску (откровенно говоря, будет ошибкой советовать начинающему собаководу проделывать этот трюк с кавказцем, так же как с прочими породами, обладающими подчас весьма суровым и твердым характером - делайте это только под присмотром опытного дрессировщика!). Последует ворчание собаки, неусидчивость, хватание и т.п. Немедленно пресеките командами: ФУ! СИДЕТЬ! - отстраняя от собаки корм. Возбужденный пес становится очень сильным, поэтому скомандуйте ему: МЕСТО! - и после того как животное успокоится, через несколько минут пододвиньте миску на прежнее место. Повторяйте упражнение. Если вы проявите настойчивость, собака привыкнет брать корм только по команде: ВОЗЬМИ! - через установленный вами отрезок времени, не проявляя при этом агрессии.

ЭТАП ВТОРОЙ: добившись частичного успеха, закрепите его миской с едой (или крупной костью), поощряя собаку за понятливость и желание вести себя правильно. Поставьте корм в пределах досягаемости собаки и по команде: ВОЗЬМИ! - скормите его. Пусть собака наестся (для этого упражнения давайте самый соблазнительный корм - например, варёный рубец - чтобы убедиться, что и сытая собака не поддается на провокации). Если же собака срывается и не реагирует на: ФУ!, СИДЕТЬ! - и проявляет агрессию, оттащите ее за поводок от корма и уберите его. Отправьте собаку на место. ЭТАП ТРЕТИЙ: Если собака хорошо проявила себя в предыдущих упражнениях, вы можете усложнить задание. Подойдите к собаке с костью (куском вареного рубца) в руке, внимательно следя за её реакцией. С командой: ВОЗЬМИ! - отдайте корм собаке. Через нужное время подайте команду: ФУ!, СИДЕТЬ!. За правильное исполнение команд позвольте псу доесть корм.

Если при выполнении упражнений собака проявляет хотя бы малейшую агрессию, корм должен немедленно отбираться. При этом надо уйти и не возвращаться, пока собака не успокоится полностью. В конечном итоге, ваша собака должна уяснить: агрессия - это голод, а подчинение и послушность хозяину - это еда. Вполне разумно, если под руководством опытного инструктора упражнения со щенком будут проводить и другие члены вашей семьи - поскольку раньше или позднее, прежде безобидный и неопасный щенок начнет проявлять природную агрессивность претендуя на управление вами... Если, конечно, еще раньше вы не научились управлять им.

Why do dogs become aggressive? How can we stop otherwise lovable pets from becoming dangerous menaces?

First, we must understand where their aggressive nature comes from. Following that, we can implement the necessary dog aggression training methods to put a stop to the problem.

A Bit of History...
The key to training your dog to be less aggressive is to first determine what is triggering the aggression. Many times the root lies in the dog's genetics: as a descendant of wolves, dogs are instinctively hard-wired to be aggressive, territorial animals. When they lived in the wild, packs of wolf-like dogs would fight over food and defend their territories.

Though this behavior has of course diminished over the years, for certain dog breeds, such as Dobermans and Rottweilers, the impulse to attack and defend is still very much present. That is why it is up to YOU, the dog owner, to train this behavior out of dogs. Though you can't change a dog's true colors, you CAN learn proper dog aggression training methods that will prevent and curtail aggressive behavior. Here are a few:

Prevention Is The Cure!
When there are several people around, it may pay to tether your dog so that he feels involved but his movements are restricted. He will understand that violence is not to be condoned, yet still be a part of the social atmosphere.

Neutering and Spaying
Especially for male dogs, having your dog de sexed is a good idea. Intact dogs are more likely to display dominance, territorial and protective aggressive behavior. Please note, however, that fixing your dog is NOT a quick fix and it can take several moths for your canine to settle down after the surgery. In addition, sometimes the spaying or neutering has no effect at all, so don't rely solely on this aggression training method.

Time Out
The "time out" method works almost as well with dogs as it does with unruly children. If you dog is acting overly aggressive and is not responding to other methods, then you should banish him to a room where he is alone and not given attention for five to ten minutes. In the wild, unruly members of the pack were ostracized until they had learned their lesson. The same rules apply today as they did hundreds of years ago. Dogs HATE to be alone, and should get the message that acting aggressively will result in solitude.

A Muzzle
If your dog acts aggressively to strangers in public, or to guests at home, you might want to consider a muzzle. While this isn't a first resort, if your dog does act unpredictably while on walks or just out in the yard, then it certainly is something to consider.

Transferred Aggression
Some situations may be out of the owner's control, especially if the irritation is happening outside of your yard. Try building a privacy fence or otherwise keeping the dog away from the source of irritation. Dogs should be trained to sit and wait for humans to respond, to give time for the dog to calm down and be able to respond to petting without aggression. Dogs that are penned or kept together may need to be separated if one dog displays transferred aggression.

Fear situations
Dogs that become aggressive in fear-provoking situations need to be reassured and re-socialized. Spend additional time and build up the dog's self-confidence. Take it slow and reward all progress, gradually working up to bigger challenges. A socialization class may help this type of dog after it has become used to new environments. Make sure that as much as possible are experiences with new situations are positive, at least for the first while. Watch for any signs of stress that your dog may be experiencing and remove them from the situation before aggression begins.

Aggression in Puppies - Prevention and Handling Tips
How dogs behave is primarily dependent on two things: the attention and training they receive as puppies,and their genetic history (the temperament of parents, the traits emphasized by the breeder, etc). There's not much we can do about the genetics; but, if we get our dogs while they are still young, we can influence them during their most teachable months. If they are subjected to gentle, effective training during this time, even the most stubborn genetic traits can be gradually overcome.

What Constitutes Aggressive Puppy Behavior?
Puppyhood is the stage at which your dog learns how to react to new situations. Lessons learned during this period will be hard to unlearn. During puppyhood, a dog is very aware of his relatively helpless status in the house, and isn't likely to test the boundaries too much while still pre-adolescent. In a very young puppy (8 weeks to approximately 4 months) the worst behavior you are likely to get in terms of aggression will be mouthing while playing - the puppy will grip you with his teeth, which is how puppies play with each other. If your puppy bites too hard while playing, this is a cause for slight concern; evidently he doesn't have any concept of bite-inhibition yet. Perhaps he was taken from his mother too young (anything earlier than 8 weeks and the pup misses out on crucial lessons in communication and on what consitutes acceptable behavior). You will take over the role of mother: when he bites too hard, react by screaming loudly and shrilly (if you're in genuine pain, this shouldn't be too hard) and quickly turn away from the pup. Ignore all further overtures to play - pups won't play with a sibling that bites too hard, which is the first and most important lesson in bite inhibition.

Prevention
The best form of aggression treatment in a puppy is prevention. Any puppy is hard work and constitutes a serious commitment on your part - it may be several years before it has matured into a fully-grown dog capable of independently carrying out the behavior you require of it. Until that time, you will need to spend time daily with your pup, training, playing, and rewarding it for good behavior.

Rewards for Good Behavior, Ignore Bad Behavior
The most effective manner of training puppies is, fortunately, also the most humane. It isn't necessary to actively punish your puppy for poor behavior: the trick is to use your brain and emphasize rewards when the puppy acts how you want. For example, say you come across your puppy chewing a shoe. You make a grab for it, the puppy runs away with the shoe, and you chase the puppy. This is reinforcing negative behavior: the puppy has just found a wonderful new game (which involves wanton destruction of your possessions). Instead of reacting like this, the smart thing to do is to turn and run slowly away. The puppy will follow you - the natural instinct of all dogs is to chase movement. When it catches up to you, gently remove the shoe from its mouth while saying, Drop it, and substitute straight away with a more appropriate toy. As soon as the pup's teeth close around the new toy, shower him with praise. Your puppy has just learned that it pays to do what you want.

Training Can Be Fun
Training is fun, both for you and your puppy - don't think of it as a chore. You're helping to sculpt the future dog, while strengthening the developing bond between the two of you. Spend five or ten minutes a day every day training your pup in the basic commands - 'come' and 'stay' for example. Don't prolong training periods beyond this time limit, and try to end on a good note. When training's over, it's time for a play session - you want your puppy to associate obedience with fun! Train frequently, for small lengths of time, and utilize food treats and lots of praise when he does as commanded.

Socialize, Socialize, Socialize
When your puppy has had his shots, its time for his first foray into the outside world. These trips should be short and pleasant - its very important not to exhaust or overwhelm your puppy when venturing out, or he will learn to associate new situations with unpleasantness. Too much at once may make him timid and fearful in the long run. Take him for a fifteen minute walk, and then its time for home and a nap - your puppy will be more tired than you would believe possible.

Food Guarding is Unacceptable
Most dogs have a strong instinct to guard their food. If you're able to teach your puppy from an early age that the approach of humans while he's eating signifies positive things for him, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run. What might happen if you come across your adult dog one day, eating something toxic - and he won't let you near to take it off him? Badly trained dogs sometimes attack people or children who approach unexpectedly when the dog's eating. It's important not to allow this behavior to develop. The best way to go about doing this is to conceal a small treat in one hand as you approach the food bowl during meal-time. Command him to sit. (If he doesnt know this command yet, gently push his head out of the bowl and push on his hindquarters until he sits, while repeating the command.) When he does so, take the food away for a few moments; hand over the treat as you do this and praise him lavishly. Return the food after a few moments and allow him to finish. You should repeat this procedure at least once or twice a week, but never more than once during a meal as he'll just get irritated (which will undermine the whole point of the procedure!).

Your Puppy is Pliable
Puppies are almost never deliberately aggressive - the capacity for aggression doesn't exist in young creatures not yet capable of defending themselves. As the owner, you are now the defining influence in your puppy's life: what you say, goes. Your puppy may misbehave from time to time, but if you keep your calm, remember your training methods, and act like the boss, your pup will quickly learn what's acceptable and what's not.
